Astronaut Shares Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her background – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

A Path to Recovery

Months following achieving her goal, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.

She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the flight, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised experts in different industries.
