California is Completely Drought-Free for the First Time in 25 Years.

Following 25 long years, not a single part of the state is enduring dryness. This landmark event comes on the heels of challenging years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated fire dangers and pressured its massive agricultural sector.

A Chart Shows An Absence of Abnormally Dry Areas

Thursday's report from the federal monitoring program confirmed that the entire state is clear of drought or abnormal dryness. This development resulted from weeks of heavy precipitation that topped up key lakes like the state's largest lakes exceeding their long-term norms.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” stated a climate scientist.

From Intense Storms to Wet Holidays

Achieving this status featured powerful and fatal winter storms that struck the state in 2023, resulting in extensive inundation, blackouts, and tragic losses. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they did not eliminate it.

As late as late December, areas like northeastern California were deemed experiencing dryness. Substantial precipitation at the onset of 2026 finally erased those remaining dry spots.

The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge

However, experts warn that drought-free conditions does not mean being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the mountain snow accumulation indicate it is approximately 70 percent of the average for this date.

This frozen reservoir, which provides about a third of the state's water as it runs off, is an essential component for long-term water security. State experts have emphasized that it is not yet time to draw conclusions for the coming year.

“What we are observing right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” explained a hydrology section chief. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to pick up by the start of April so that we’re closer to average.”

Even as the official status indicates no dryness, attention turns to maintaining this positive water situation during the rest of the year.
