Schools in the northern part of Nigeria have become frequent targets for armed groups

Gun-wielding individuals have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a educational institution for young women in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The armed faction invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.

The armed individuals "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their living quarters, according to a statement.

A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now undergoing medical care.

Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to create fear.

Community members disclosed to media that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into nearby bushland.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "additional police tactical units, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.

A organized locating and saving mission is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.

In the last several years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have become frequent targets for armed groups, who frequently execute kidnappings to seek ransom payments or leverage deals with the government.

The incident in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge afflicting the area, causing relatives in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they anticipate and pray for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Protection challenge in northern Nigeria has intensified significantly in the last several months, with learning centers suffering the most of the violence.
