The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
