From Disappointing to Defective – Is There Any Team Actively Seeking to Win the Super Bowl This Season?

No league promotes competitive balance like the NFL: it's their core marketing message. However, after 10 weeks in this campaign, this doesn't represent a landscape featuring uniform distribution separating contenders, pretenders, and middle-of-the-pack clubs. It’s one where the majority of teams are merely sufficient.

NFC Standings Definition

Looking at the NFC side, to some degree, we see clearer definition. Los Angeles and Seattle (both at 7-2) appear to be the most complete teams across the league, and secured decisive victories in their weekend matchups. Philadelphia at 6-2 notwithstanding their difficulties continue to possess among the most gifted lineups across the NFL, comparable to Green Bay (five wins, two losses, one tie). The Lions also (6-3), with their fluctuating form in trench play while managing tension on their coaching staff, have shown they can hammer good teams. Regarding these five teams, it's straightforward to construct a championship trajectory.

AFC Playoff Chaos

In the AFC however, the playoff picture is a jumbled mess. The current division frontrunners at this stage: the Colts, Patriots, Broncos (all at 8-2) and the Steelers (5-4). Read that again. No Chiefs presence. No Bills inclusion. Neither Ravens nor Bengals. Historically strong franchises, featuring premier quarterback talent, possess either glaring roster weaknesses or are dealing with health issues.

Competitive Balance System

From certain perspectives, this represents the NFL's perfect scenario. But watching this year’s four division leaders in the American Football Conference remains somewhat odd. Components of every squad meet championship standards, though not comprehensively. Were you questioned to lock in your conference championship predictions today, could you assuredly select any one of the four division leaders?

Indianapolis Outlook

Starting in Indianapolis, the signal-caller hasn’t quite reached pumpkin status. But the last two weeks have raised concerns. He’s back to turning over the ball and failing against blitzes. He was sacked seven times against the Falcons on Sunday, and had a brief period where he delivered an intercepted pass and lost three fumbles. This is a week after he committed turnovers on five occasions versus Pittsburgh.

The Colts’ offense performed well initially since Jones evaded game-changing errors. The running back and protection unit ensure Indianapolis remains good enough to survive occasional setbacks, as demonstrated overseas. Yet Jones going back to his historically mistake-heavy play would finish championship hopes.

New England Patriots

New England appears somewhat similar. Last season, they were league laughingstocks. Today, they stand as the league’s happiest surprise and the most successful franchise in football post seven wins in a row. Except for losing due to fumbles a winnable game against Pittsburgh, they would currently hold nine wins, one loss with the top standing. In the prior year, they seemed veteran and plodding. Currently they're inexperienced, speedy and bold. Nevertheless, one cannot overlook the weakness of New England's opponents. They have faced the easiest slate throughout football, yet vulnerabilities remain. The signal-caller has been brought down on 35 occasions – ranking second league-wide – with several hits he absorbed on Sunday proved brutal. As the season progresses, that punishment compounds.

Denver Analysis

The Broncos hold eight wins similarly, yet it seems that they're barely surviving. Bo Nix has shown inconsistency, and the offensive unit laboring, with the defense doing the majority of the work. Without serviceable quarterback play, the Broncos aren’t scaring anyone in the postseason. The Chargers are also hovering in the Western division holding a 7-2 record, but the injuries affecting their protection unit will create difficulties to mount a deep postseason tilt.

Steelers Examination

Then we have the Steelers, inexplicably frontrunning the Northern division even after suffering a decisive loss to Los Angeles during prime time. Their scoring margin remains negative, their defense too often disappears, with their quarterback's restrictions at this stage of his career regularly manifest. They maintain a 5-4 record while surviving, but Baltimore, with Lamar Jackson healthy again with manageable games ahead, have won three consecutive. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that the Ravens have narrowed to within one game of Pittsburgh, though the speed of this shift is an indictment of the Steelers' uneven performances. That the Ravens started with a 1-5 record and currently seem likely to claim the title reveals much about the complete conference.

Historical Favorites

Baltimore constitutes part within a trio of powerhouses – together with Bills and Chiefs – driven by elite quarterback play, who would still strike the most fear in opposing teams if they qualified. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, yet Kansas City and Buffalo cannot get out of their own way.

Buffalo Analysis

A week ago, the Bills felt confident after beating the Chiefs. This weekend they encountered among the season's worst defeats this year. They didn’t just lose against Miami; they looked terrible, losing 30-13 as visitors. It was Miami’s first win against Buffalo in over three years.
