New Year Celebrants Advised to Wrap Up Warm with Snow Predicted Throughout the UK

Weather experts are reporting a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall likely over large parts of the UK. Revelers are advised to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Celebrations Continue Despite Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are planned to go ahead, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," stated the national forecaster.

Displays Under Open but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and open skies. The mercury are due to be cold, so extra layers a necessity, as per forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Forecast to Plummet Further

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Medical Advisories Issued

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this signified the weather could to cause significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those aged 65 or over.
