The British tennis star secured the biggest win of his professional journey by coming back from a set down to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.
Even though he had before beaten Alcaraz on two occasions, this win marks Norrie's first ever win over a reigning world number one.
"Huge. So big for me," stated Norrie, who is now the fifth British man in history to defeat a top-ranked player. "Returning from health issues last year, I fell in the initial match of qualifiers here. I just sought to embrace my performance in the closing months of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the biggest win of my tennis journey, my initial victory over the world No 1 and probably the most in-form competitor in the tennis scene right now."
Norrie, ranked 31st globally, also ended Alcaraz's dominant streak of nine straight final appearances and 17 successive premier event successes, which was the best series of performances in the Spaniard's developing career.
The top seed seemed to be advancing smoothly to a win at the start as he eased past the opening set. Nevertheless, the British contender gradually fought his way into the match by serving with greater precision and engaging the Spaniard into lengthy, physical points. His relentless steadiness and dependability steadily left its mark.
Through most of the match, the world number one served well but he found it challenging to find his timing with his rally strokes. The young star seemed especially struggling executing his primary weapon, which has been the best shot in the game for a large part of this season, committing 29 forehand unforced errors and a overall of 54 unforced errors. On the other side, Norrie offered Alcaraz very few errors, maintaining his steadiness, athleticism and depth all match while performing well on serve and picking his spots to force himself into the court and play aggressively.
In the tense final games, Norrie expertly kept his nerve to defeat the best player in the game.
Following dealing for an extended period due to a major arm issue and challenges with his performance, the tennis professional fell as far down as No 91 this year. Having reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the French Open fourth round after that, this win highlights the veteran's progress as he attempts to make his way to the world's top twenty and even higher. The Spanish sensation, despite his incredible accomplishments, is yet to solve how to display his best tennis on indoor courts.
