Trumpism's most illuminating and characteristic instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but perhaps its most illuminating – came earlier this autumn. In the course of several weeks, the American president began displaying the public his designs for a lavish reception room two times larger compared to the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to construct it.
He has committed acts countless times more severe – the existing assessment of deaths from his cuts to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and this week an analysis predicted his fossil fuel policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No previous president would have dared – really, no other president would have conceived – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of multiple the nation's most affluent, the majority of whom conduct transactions with federal agencies.

As bewildering as it is to watch the president attempt to overturn the traditional concept regarding democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group of Americans who might not perceive it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we were raised with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they turned a figure of affection into an icon of hostility who endorses specifically the brutality that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Toxic Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Christ that I grew up with, because theoretically Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and given that the quickly increasing segment within America could have minimal awareness about him because they identify as skeptics or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; but I do think that exist valuable insights of great price within Christian narrative.

The child matures in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his message concerns compassion for other people, particularly for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and housing. Christ's response to aggression is to turn the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a way to instruct the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing states that when an individual takes your outer garment you ought to provide him your sweater as well.
The apparent and clear reality that the Savior of the gospels calls for a kind of extreme compassion focused on the needy is what has always made the Christian faith something of a controversial faith: attractive to the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Best of Us
So I have been heartened to observe the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge during the previous year. It has served as great solace to participate in developing the campaign that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and likely has encouraged electorate to participate in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We must have to maintain it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags throughout each rally and appeals to the highest qualities in US history.
