The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the right to question specific calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to review other decisions, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
